Evening Passage

Painting of a group of Argentinosaurus, with some non-specific pterosaurs passing by. Practicing a more involved maquette building process, and testing out what results from this approach are like! I’ve documented the full approach below- from sketchbook thumbnail to rigging a sculpt, and all the way to a final! All modeling, sculpting, rigging, lighting, etc done in Blender 4.2!

Final Painting

Initial Sketchbook Thumbnail

Cleaned up views of the design to use as sculpting reference.

Sculpting approach- initial block in is done using primitives with subdivision modifiers, then shapes are joined, remeshed, and sculpted. Final step is to use vertex paint on the sculpture, then apply a very basic rig.

Similar process as sauropods for the pterosaurs- block in with subdiv surface modifier, sculpt, vertex paint, and finally rig.

Final Render

View within 3D Viewport- sarupod and pterosaur sculpts have been posed, and now lighting is manipulated to match initial thumbnail’s impact.

Steps to finish the painting. 1) Linework is done over the render to further push design and posing, and a basic sky is blocked in. 2)Flat colors are applied, and all lighting is kept to adjustment layers. 3) Block in completed, all animals are composed of groups of local colors with adjustment laters affecting colors. 4) Flattened copies are made of each animal, and while layers are kept separate, now most adjustments are made with normal paint. 5) Final Adjustments in lighting, motion blur, and other tweaks to get a finish!
