Waveriders
A pair of the large pliosaur Sachicasaurus vitae, swimming around 124 million years ago in the waters over what will someday be Sáchica, Colombia. As a Colombian, it is so exciting that such a noteworthy species is from my home country!
Final painting
Early color sketch. I spent a lot of time finessing the composition in terms of the drawing, and tried to find a lighting approach that emphasized the feeling of deep open waters like where these animals would have lived and hunted. The color rough was invaluable for making this a really straightforward painting. Even with the problem solving that comes with any piece, having this thumbnail as a north star made things so much easier.
